The Spice girls are often credited with inventing 'girl power', but in reality they were several hundred years too late! Joan of Arc gets my vote. She liberated the the city of Orléans from the Plantagenetes in 1429, before being burned at the stake two years later, aged just 19! And that is where we find ourselves today: the very lovely city of Orléans! On seeing the gothic cathedral, it was the first time during this trip that I've genuinely been 'wowed'. It is a truly majestic building!
We are staying with Jean-Marc, Marie and their 2 week old daughter Delphine! They recently completed a two and a half year world bicycle tour and it was great to chat with them about their experiences, as we will be visiting many of same countries that they did. Yet another delicious and filling meal (tartiflette and homemade chocolate cake) was prepared for us, warm showers were enjoyed, clothes laundered and a comfy bed slept in whilst the torrential rain poured down outside! It was very generous of them to look after Ashley and I considering that they have a gorgeous little girl who must demand their full attention (and deprive them of sleep!)
On the way to Orléans, we cycled from our campsite in Tours, through Amboise (really nice town centred around a huge royal chateau) before finding camp in the grounds of another majestic chateau at Chambord. The weather wasn't great and the rain started to fall just as we had finished dinner, so we hastily washed up the dishes and just left them outside before diving into the tent for shelter. Of course that led to a few issues in the morning of having to flick slugs off our bowls and cutlery before eating breakfast....although given that we ended up eating purely carbohydrates and sugar, perhaps a bit of protein wouldn't have gone amiss?!
We head off again today for another Warmshower (!) before a day of rest at Gien tomorrow, where hopefully the sun will be shining and we can get some of our camping gear dried out!
